Field research or equivalent research activity


Admission requirements

BA in linguistics or related discipline


Students are strongly encouraged to carry out field research in the Americas as a preparation for the thesis to be written in the second semester. If field research is not possible, you can conduct archive or museum research, or follow a course at a university abroad. The last part of the spring semester is primarily composed of writing up the results of the field research (or archive/museum research) —guided throughout by your study tutor.

Course objectives

To show that you can carry out independent research on a relevant topic, illustrating your knowledge and understanding of Native American studies. You will learn to apply independent thinking and reasoning skills to complex scientific problems which will be evident from the final thesis at the end of the academic year.



Mode of instruction

Discussions with supervisor on research topic.

Assessment method

Regular meetings with the supervisor and the final thesis will be graded.



Reading list

Will be set depending on the topic of the research after consultation with the supervisor.
