This course will analyze the Vargas, JK and Goulart governments, with emphasis on the simultaneous processes of state building and industrialization. It will analyze the formation of political parties in post-war, the so-called populism and class sectors, highlighting the social movements – Peasant Leagues and the confrontation between Brazilian elites linked to international capital, and especially the American one. The 2nd Vargas government in its early democratic stage established the large state enterprises, Petrobrás, Eletrobrás and Siderurgia Nacional. The JK government developed the propjet of “50 Years in Five”, while the Goulart Government failed in its attempt to establish the Agrarian Reform and the Law which proposed to control the outflow of foreign earnings, which cost him the government. The course will also examine how the conservative elites were linked to the military, which lead to the Coup. Understanding why this period was called the democratic framework by Brazilian historians and was also named “Construction Interrompida” by Celso Furtado in one of his major works, with major implications for future. To what extent the authoritarian period in the region was driven by changes in capitalism and the strengthening of U.S. hegemony on a global scale.
