Peacebuilding After Conflict

Vak
2011-2012

Violent conflicts leave deep social, political and personal wounds. How can a (new) government overcome the trauma and restart public administration? In this course, the causes of violent conflicts are analyzed and the ways in which conflicts are settled, frozen or transformed. Rebuilding a war-torn society and economy, ways to encourage reconciliation, building the foundations of a rule-of -aw system and introducing democracy and other forms of peaceful conflict settlement are examined. Students read chapters from several books, articles and papers, all on Blackboard. Students give oral presentations and write papers on examples of violent conflicts and peacebuilding programmes. The grade is 1/3 oral presentation, 1/3 paper and 1/3 exam.
