Description
This course gives an introduction to the technology and typology of the Palaeolithic, and to various methods of technological and functional analysis of lithic assemblages. This course will also introduce studies of the spatial patterning of Middle Palaeolithic sites. Students will work with lithics from some Lower and Middle Palaeolithic key sites, e.g. Maastricht-Belvedere (MIS7) and Neumark-Nord 2 (MIS5).
Course objectives
Working knowledge of lithic technology, with a focus on the Middle Palaeolithic;
Basic skills required to analyse and present overview of lithic assemblages.

The course load will be distributed as follows:
7×2 hours of lectures;
280 pages of literature;
Paper.

Assessment method
Technological assignment (research paper). Deadline for submission: 1 month after final course meeting.
