Classical Texts: Schopenhauer

Vak
2012-2013

Admission requirements

Admission to this course is restricted to first-year BA students in Philosophy (BA Plus-traject).

Description

During this course we will read some of the key sections of Schopenhauer’s World as Will and Representation . The goal of the meetings is to gain an understanding of the structure of Schopenhauer’s most important work as well as of some of the key themes in his philosophy. The coursework will require a careful study of Schopenhauer’s arguments in his account of crucial topics such as Will, Reason, Understanding, Emotions, the Body, Aesthetics and Religion.

In order to grasp the foundations of Schopenhauer’s thought it will be essential to situate him within the western philosophical tradition and, in particular, in relation to his immediate predecessor, Immanuel Kant. The topics that we will focus on play an important role in Schopenhauer’s influence on his successors, especially Nietzsche. The study of the World as Will and Representation will not only offer an understanding of Schopenhauer’s system but also a sense of his place and importance in the history of philosophy.
