Beschrijving

This course provides a survey of the development of Brazilian literature from the 19th century to the present day, through the study of a selection of key texts. The course will begin with the study of Machado de Assis (1839-1908), Brazil’s foremost writer, and will move on to consider the aesthetic and cultural innovations of the Modernist movement of the early 20th century, before studying some of Brazil most trailblazing writers, such as Graciliano Ramos and Clarice Lispector. The course will address issues such as literature’s role in the establishment of a sense of national identity vis-à-vis Brazil’s colonial past, the relationship between sertão (hinterland) and city, region and nation, migration, gender and race.
