Our views regarding ageing are often associated with infirmity, morbidity and the disease. Whilst ageing may indeed result in a progressive functional loss, it has now become abundantly clear that the human ageing process is a highly malleable. Indeed average life expectancy has almost doubled in the previous century which suggest a considerable influence from a broad range of environmental and lifestyle factors. Consequently, both from an individual, as well as, a societal perspective, it is highly desirable to apply the latest scientific insights and interventions to extend particularly healthy life expectancy, vitality and well being in old age. In this segment of the course we want to examine these insights and debate their merits. This will require reviewing a combination of insights from physiology as well as psychology, including data from lifestyle and diet related studies associated with vitality and healthy longevity.
