MA internship Prehistory of North-Western Europe

Description

The European Prehistory profile organises different kinds of fieldwork and is working on several research projects. Master students can participate in most of these projects in several ways.

The options for fieldwork internships are:

  • The Maaskant region (settlement research; supervised by R. Jansen en H. Fokkens).

  • West-Frisia (surveys and sometimes excavation; supervised by H. Fokkens).

  • The Veluwe (surveys and excavation of burial mounds, supervised by D. Fontijn).
    Students can participate in these fieldwork projects by writing a research plan, carrying out ca. 3 weeks of fieldwork and writing a reflective report.

The internship can also involve post-excavation research or research in the framework of one of the staff members. In 2013-2014 we will be offering various projects:

  • Analysis of excavated material from excavations and surveys in the Maaskant region (Bronze Age, Iron Age, Roman Period).

  • Analysis of material from excavations and surveys in West-Frisia (Bronze Age), including unpublished material from museums in the region.

  • Analysis of finds from the barrows in the Veluwe.

RMA-students taking this course have to write a contextual chapter that places the internship research in a wider (international) perspective.

Course objectives

  • Learn how to conduct research;

  • Learn how to set-up research;

  • Learn how to write research reports;

  • Learn how to set-up and supervise field work;

  • Specifically for RMA-students: learn how to place research results in a wider perspective.

Ects distribution

The course load will be distributed as follows:

  • Planning (0,5 ects);

  • Internship (3 ects);

  • Evaluation report (1,5 ects).

Assessment method

  • Internship assessment by the supervisor (70%);

  • Evaluation report (30%).
