Public Air Law

This course covers the Chicago Convention system on international civil aviation, including its drafting history, bilateral air service agreements, deregulation and liberalization of air transport services, air traffic management from a worldwide and European perspective, criminal law treaties and arrangements, the International Civil Aviation Organization, the International Air Transport Association, and other public and private organizations, both world-wide and regional, such as ACAC, AFCAC, LACAC, ECAC, Eurocontrol, OECD, UNCTAD and WTO. Special attention is given to European air law. Inter-airline co-operation, especially alliances, is also covered.

Onderwijsvormen

The course will consist of approximately 20 lectures. The lecturers make extensive use of interactive lectures, thus encouraging the students to test their prior and newly gained knowledge. Students are also asked to prepare presentations which form part of their assessment method; they are asked to research cases to write and deliver presentations, exercising the use of ICT as one of the main forms of media for research and writing. The assignments compel them to use the different law libraries in Leiden and at other locations e.g. the Peace Palace.

Toetsing

  • For face-to-face students, the course is assessed by means of an oral presentation, a written paper and a written exam.

  • Blended learning students will follow the first two weeks of the course and will then work on assignments to be submitted via internet. No exam is required if an average of 6 is obtained for the assignments.
