This course is only available for students in the BA International Studies who have passed Portuguese 1 Beginners and Portuguese 2 Pre-intermediate.

Description

This Portuguese language course develops written and oral communication skills acquired over the course of Portuguese 1 and 2. Topics concerning the contemporary Portuguese-speaking world in global context are integrated into language learning through an interactive programme of language acquisition.

Course objectives

This course covers four key skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing, to an high intermediate level. Course-book and other additional, including authentic, materials will be used in the development of communication skills through practical written and oral exercises (individual and group-based). The course will expand students knowledge of grammar, vocabulary and awareness of register. Students will develop key skills, such as presentation skills in Portuguese, team work, working to deadlines. These are integrated into language-specific, practical application of language skills in a variety of contexts, such as for example report writing; debating etc.

Target level for Portuguese 3 in terms of the Common European Framework:
Listening: B1+/B2
Reading: B1+/B2
Spoken Interaction: B1+/B2
Spoken Production : B1+/B2
Writing: B1+/B2

Mode of instruction

Two two hour tutorials every week

Attending lectures and tutorials is compulsory. If you are not able to attend a lecture or a tutorial, please inform the tutor of the course. Being absent without notification can result in a lower grade or exclusion from the final exam or essay.

Course Load

Total course load: 140 hours (5 EC)

Attending classes: 48 hrs (4 hours per week x 12 weeks)
Preparing classes, exams and extra activities: 92 hrs

Assessment method

Written assessments: 75%
Oral assessment: 25% of mark.

Written assessments: class test 40 min. 20% of mark; written assignment 15%; final written exam 2 h exam 40% (written tests include linguistic exercises – eg. fill-the-gap exercises – and written comprehension or short composition).

Oral assessment: 25% of mark (short presentation and question/answer session).

The resit will be a written exam of two hours, and will test if the students have reached the end level of this semester. This exam consists of the following components:

  • Reading and writing;

  • Written dialogue;

  • Vocabulary and grammar.
