The course will examine the difficult expansion of political rights and citizenship in Brazilian history, since the oligarchic times of the Empire) and the First Republic to the potential and limits of the present Brazilian democracy
The course will be structured around the following topics:
1. The Empire (1822-1889): how was Brazil able to remain united?
2. The First Republic (1889-1930): Republic without democracy.
3. The Vargas years (1930-1945): Revolution and dictatorship
4. The Second Republic (1945-1964): the rise of Populism
5. The military dictatorship (1964-1985): economic growth and political repression
6. Democratic Brazil (1985-2015 ): virtues and limits of Brazilian democracy

Course objectives

The objective of the course is to give an insight into the political development of Brazil, where a republic succeeded a monarchy. However, the republic took different forms before becoming a democracy, passing through civil and military dictatorships and populism, which had an impact on the development of the Brazilian society.

Lectures, presentations by students and essay.

Course Load

5 EC = 140 hours in total. 24 hours for class attendance. 32 hours for reading assignments 84 hours for writing a paper.

Assessment method

An essay with a length of 3000 words: 100%.

The essay can be redone in case of a resit.

Blackboard will be used to post all the necessary information about the course (programme, time tables, announcements, etc.). Also notices will be posted on interesting activities (such as Conferences, workshops, expositions, etc.), which are related to the themes analyzed during the course.
