Cognitive-Behavioural Interventions


Admission requirements

Students have passed the MSc course Basic Therapeutic Skills. Only open to Master students Clinical Psychology and Health Psychology.

Presence requirements

Presence is obligatory for all workgroups. Absence of maximum one meeting is allowed only for very urgent reasons, to be judged prior to the course by the coordinator:


This course consists of a theoretical and a practical part, which will be given simultaneously. The more theoretical part consists of lectures on general aspects of cognitive-behaviour therapy and specific interventions for different forms of psychopathology and psychological consequences of chronic disease. In small group sessions running parallel to these lectures, students will be taught basic cognitive-behavioural interventions, such as:

  • case formulation

  • exposure

  • response prevention

  • identifying, challenging and modifying negative thoughts and attitudes

During part of these practice sessions students will work independently. Students have to write a paper on their experiences with applying these interventions as an apprentice therapist with one of their fellow students.

Course objectives

The main objectives of this course are:

  • Students will acquire advanced knowledge of the theoretical background of cognitive-behavioural therapy and specific interventions for different forms of psychopathology

  • Students will learn basic skills in applying the main cognitive-behavioural interventions

  • Students will be taught to reflect on their therapeutic attitude and interventions and to report on the assessment, progress and outcome of a mini-therapy

Students need to enroll for lectures and work group sessions. Please consult the Instructions on registration


Students are not automatically enrolled for an examination. They can register via uSis from 100 to 10 calendar days before the date; students who are not registered will not be permitted to take the examination. Registering for exams

Mode of instruction

  • Lectures, training sessions, practical exercises, mini therapy (full presence is obligatory)

  • Lectures in English and workshops/papers in English or Dutch

Assessment method

Students will get a mark for the work groups and a mark for the exam; they have to pass both the work groups and the exam. The final mark for the course will be: (the mark for the work groups + the mark for the exam)/2.

  • Exam: There will be an essay examination on selected chapters of the O’Donohue & Fischer book and the lecture slides posted on Blackboard. Additional information about the exam will be given during the Questions & Answers lecture.

  • Work groups: The mark for the work groups will be determined on the basis of the final report of the mini therapy, active participation in the work groups, and the quality of the assignments.

The Faculty of Social Sciences has instituted that instructors use a software programme for the systematic detection of plagiarism in students’ written work. In case of fraud disciplinary actions will be taken. Please see the information concerning fraud
