Admission to the MA Theology & Religious Studies
Beschrijving
This course consists of two distinct parts. The first part (weeks 1-6) will be devoted to contemporary theories of religion. Students will confront introductions to various theories that aim to explain or explore religion as a human phenomenon with a specific case-study on the maintenance and production of ‘belief’ among American converts to Evangelical Christianity.
The second part (weeks 7-13) will be comparative in nature and will be devoted to ‘religious freedom’ in the modern world and the problems this notion produces in society and for students of religion. Students will argue cases and debates with a special focus on what people who engage in these debates actually think ‘religion’ is, does, or should be.

Insights in recent theories of ‘religion’, and in the use of ‘religion’ as a concept in scholarly and societal debates. Awareness of the fact that the study of ‘religion’ is different from the study of ‘a particular religion’, and that theory is needed to overcome that difference. ### Studielast

Blackboard will be used as a means of communication, and to build up a repository of relevant cases and debates concerning religious freedom.

Students are required not only to be present for all sessions of the course, but to attend three (in the case of those who not speak Dutch, two) additional events: the launch of LUCSoR on September, 24 (3-5, during class time), a Master-class on the definition of religion by Professor Wouter Hanegraaff (Amsterdam) on Friday, 26 September, 3-5, and the workshop on The Persuasive Power of Religious Narratives on Friday, 17 October.
