Description
This course covers the basics of atomic and molecular structure, chemical bonding, phase and phase diagrams, structures of solids, elementary thermodynamics and kinetics, and introductory level acid-base and electrochemistry. Special topics which interpose regular classes include nuclear energy and waste, storage of intermittent energy in chemicals, the Earth and human body from a chemist’s perspective, and the chemical industry.
Course objectives
Students are
able to perform standard chemical calculations
are proficient in using chemical symbolic language to describe chemical reactions
can explain in detail the atomic and molecular structure of common materials
can describe the relation between the microscopic structure and macroscopic properties for common materials
discuss energy production and storage considerations from a chemical perspective
discuss the chemical composition of planet earth and the human body
develop an appreciation for chemistry as a science contributing to energy and health related topics

Mode of instruction
Strictly chemical subjects are introduced through lectures. Students study the course material and regularly hand in home work in preparation for a written exam. Special topics are studied prior to class in workgroups and discussed by student presentations and general debates. In parallel, students write a short essay on the chemical background of a topic of limited choice. Attendance of classes is required.
Assessment
Students are assessed on the basis of homework (20%), an written exam (40%), short group presentations (20%) and an essay (20%). Peer review on the basis of standard rubrics provides additional informal assessment.

There will be a Blackboard site available for this course. Students will be enrolled at least one week before the start of classes.

Access to the “Mastering Chemistry” site allows you to practice in the Pearson on-line learning center. It is not required for the class, but you may benefit from the tutorials, question banks etc. Access to the site also provides access to the e-text, which I will annotate if necessary.
