Description
In this course we will focus on the art and architecture of the times of the Dukes of Burgundy, starting with John the Good, who was the first ruler of the house of Valois-Burgundy, and ending with Mary of Burgundy (+1482). This dynasty is well-known for its sumptuous art patronage. During the course we will be dealing with the art and architecture of the Burgundian homelands of the dukes but also at how Burgundian art and architecture spread throughout the territories newly-acquired by them. At the same time, we will be paying attention to historiography of the subject, starting with Huizinga’s ‘Waning of the Middle Ages’. The classes will take the form of lectures followed by discussion, for which the students will have to prepare themselves by reading the set texts. In addition, one or two excursions will be part of the course (Utrecht and Bruges or Brussels), following which each student will have to write a short review. During a one-day seminar all students will present a 20-30 minute paper.
Course objectives
To get an insight in the art and architecture studied during this course; to get an insight in the historiography of this subject; to learn how to find, read and evaluate critically the relevant literature; to reflect and theorize on the subject; the think up and work out a case study; to present this case study in class with the use of powerpoint; to learn how to evaluate presentations of other students and act as a referee; to write an academic paper.

Seminars 2 hrs x 9 a week = 18 hours
Two excursions = 28 hrs (16 hrs on location, 12 hrs of travel)
Compulsory reading = 44 hrs

Writing of the final course paper, 4000 words = 150 hrs (collecting research material, reading and rereading texts, composing and writing a paper, rereading and correcting final draft).

ResMa students that take this course will write a paper that reflects the demands of the Research Master. That is, they will have to formulate more complex and original research questions than the MA students, include a critical positioning towards the state of the art of its subject, and produce a longer paper (6000 words including bibliography instead of 4000 words).
