This course is only available for students in the BA International Studies who have passes Mandarin 1 Beginners and Mandarin 2 Pre-intermediate.

Description

This course aims at the development of communicative skills, and this course has a special focus on translation skills. It also introduces frequently used grammatical structures in order to solidify the learner’s knowledge of Chinese grammar. The expanding of cultural knowledge about China and its people is an integral part of the course.

Course objectives

Learning outcomes
Learners will acquire communicative skills enabling them to describe experiences and events. They will be able to organize and present their viewpoints on familiar topics. (roughly corresponding to CEFR A2-B1 level)
Learners will be able to read and understand short, simple texts on familiar matters containing the highest frequency vocabulary. They will also be able to understand everyday material such as brochures, short official documents, written advertisements or announcements. (roughly corresponding to CEFR A2-B1 level). This semester more complicated sentence pattern will be taught.
Learners will be able to write 200 Chinese simplified characters (around 1000 after this course). They will be able to write some short texts on familiar topics, or a letter describing personal experiences.
Learners will acquire 320 (approximately 1200 after the third course) vocabulary items. After this course learners will master basic Chinese grammar constructions and expressions, which is sufficient for basic daily conversation and easy translation.

Mode of instruction

Two two hour tutorials every week
Attending lectures and tutorials is compulsory. If you are not able to attend a lecture or a tutorial, please inform the tutor of the course. Being absent without notification can result in a lower grade or exclusion from the final exam or essay.

Course Load

Total course load: 140 hours (5 EC)
Attending classes: 48 hrs (4 hours per week x 12 weeks)
Preparing classes, exams and extra activities: 92 hrs

Assessment method

Assessment

The first oral exam is an individual interview; the second one is a group presentation.
Class dictation tests will be held once a week. Final reading and writing test will held in the end of the semester.

Weighing

  • Weekly class dictation test 20%

  • Oral exam1 20 % ( individual interview)

  • Oral exam2 20% (group play)

  • Reading&writing exam 40%

Resit

If the final grade is insufficient (lower than a 6), there is the possibility of a resit.
The resit will be a written exam of two hours, and will test if the students have reached the end level of this semester. This exam consists of the following components:

  • Reading

  • Vocabulary

  • grammar.

Remarks

For this course attendance and participation is essential. Classes missed for a good reason have to be discussed with the language instructor BEFORE the class takes place. Frequent absence will inevitably lead to lower participation grades, or denied access to the final exam.
This course uses Integrated communicative language learning method. Therefore active participation in the classroom activities is essential for successful learning outcomes.
