Description

The aim of this course is to familiarise students with Moroccan Arabic (darija), the spoken dialect of Morocco. The first seminars focus on the specific sounds and pronunciation of Moroccan Arabic. The course provides students with basic grammar and vocabulary in order to practice their speaking skills in Moroccan Arabic. Theory and exercises are taken from Marokkaans Arabisch, een cursus voor zelfstudie en klassikaal gebruik by Jan Hoogland which is the handbook for this course.

Course objectives

Students are expected to be able to express themselves and take part in conversations on topics of everyday life such as personal identification, living and housing, and food.

Course Load

The total course load is 140 hours (5 EC), allocated as follows:

  • Tutorial attendance: 8 × 4= 32 hours

  • Preparation of tutorials and assignments, and test preparation: 104 hours

  • Quizzes and tests: 4 hours

Assessment method

  • Classroom participation: 20%

  • Quizzes and assignments: 20%

  • Final test: 60%

Quizzes and tests can consist of speaking and listening exercises as well as some written exercises.
If the final grade is 5 or less students may take a resit once (100%).
