Vak
2016-2017

Admission requirements

An introductory course in generative (English) syntax and a course in (English) phonology. If in doubt, consult the course tutor before registering.

Description

This course will provide an introduction to the interface between prosody and syntax, discussing various the aspects of their correspondence. Based on the assumption that prosody reflects on syntactic structure (rather than the other way around), we will characterize the mapping from syntax to prosody, mismatches between syntactic and prosodic constituency and review the most important theories of the prosody-syntax mapping. The primary focus will be on the English language, but we will also discuss important aspects of the prosody of other languages (Dutch, Hungarian, Italian, possibly others). Knowledge of these other languages is not required.
The teaching material includes chapters from books, articles.
