Beschrijving

This seminar is a joined course offered by the law faculties of the University of Zurich and Leiden University for motivated bachelor students in their second or third year and for master students from the University of Zurich. The course is open for 20 students in total (10 Leiden/10 Zurich) and it will be presupposed that all students have a basic knowledge both of substantive criminal law and of criminal procedure law.

During this course students are introduced to 10 subjects around the theme of terrorism and criminal law. Each student will be allocated to one student from each university, so that each subject is addressed by both a student from the University of Zurich and a student from Leiden University. Students will then perform, mostly independent and self-relying, scientific research on this subject. During the course of 4 weeks students will be supervised in writing an argumented essay, substantiated by carefully selected legislation, jurisprudence, and literature on the chosen subject.

Leerdoelen

The objective of the course is to discuss in depth the issues arising in criminal law due to the war on terror. Students are trained to write and present their solutions both orally and in writing in a structured way, and participate in academic discussions on these topics. After successfully completing this course, students are able to:

  • critically analyze issues surrounding criminal counterterrorism law and discuss these issues from a comparative law perspective;

  • interpret and analyze the relevant literature and sources critically and to present (both orally and in writing) solutions for legal problems after thorough legal research;

  • present their own opinion on relevant legal matters on the basis of sound and convincing legal arguments and to defend this opinion in a legal debate;

  • provide feedback on presentations given by their peers.

Onderwijsvormen

Next to these lectures, students from both universities will present their essays and discuss the research of other students.
