Admission requirements

BA or BSc degree in Archaeology or a closely related discipline, plus BA2 courses “Data Analysis” and “Geographic Information Systems (GIS)” (or undergraduate courses in Digital Archaeology deemed to be equivalent by the instructor).

Description

This practical course will provide students with the opportunity to acquire hands-on knowledge in one or several subfields of Digital Archaeology of their choice as presented in the Digital Data Acquisition and Analysis course.
The exact nature of the work will be discussed by individual students with the instructor and depend on the student’s interest and the data available for study.

The individual choice of topic will usually be related to your master’s thesis. The laboratory work will include the collection and processing of digital data from different sources and/or the acquisition of skills in a related software programme, e.g. based on self-guided tutorials, in the computer laboratory.

Course objectives

Ability to:

  • identify and collect digital data from different sources suitable for a pre-defined purpose;

  • select and use suitable tools, e.g. software;

  • process and analyse the data using the tools in order to generate a digital database for a pre-defined purpose.

Mode of instruction

  • Individual assignments;

  • Self-guided study.

Course load

The course load will be distributed as follows:

  • 120 hours of laboratory work (4 ects);

  • Report of 1,500-1,800 words (1 ects).

Assessment method

Scientific report. All laboratory work and the final report must be completed by the end of block 3.

Reading list

Depends on the chosen subfield of Digital Archaeology.
