NTV2: The Entrepreneurial Process


Admission requirements



In this course you will explore the process of growing new technology ventures (companies) based on opportunities created in science and technology. Core of the course is studying and discussing a number of business cases covering the entrepreneurial process from various angles. In addition, in In-Class Interviews, guest entrepreneurs from the BioScience Park and Hubspot-Leiden share their experiences with starting and growing new technology companies. Numerous questions will be addressed, such as: what triggered the entrepreneurs to start a company, how were the opportunities framed and evaluated, what were the business models employed, how were these start-ups funded and staffed, what were major hurdles and setbacks in company development and how did the entrepreneurs deal with them?

This course is intended for anyone interested in working as an entrepreneur, manager, consultant, analyst, or investor. Moreover, the course will provide an analytical background for scientists, engineers and medical doctors with an interest in the industrial aspects of their academic work. The course emphasises small-scale, interactive teaching that focuses on real-life case studies.

Topics covered:
This course provides students training in the use of key concepts and frameworks related to entrepreneurship, technology transfer, licensing, negotiating, business model analysis, start-up strategy, valuation, risk-reward ratio’s, crowd funding, venture capital, team assembly and equity distribution

Course objectives

The overarching learning outcome is that you will be better able to anticipate and deal with the challenges you will face when starting and building a technology venture. More specifically, the course will enhance your ability to:

  • explain the behavioural perspective of entrepreneurship and apply the framework for assessing forces driving entrepreneurial behavior;

  • recognise the critical steps in creating a university spin-off company;

  • deal with the opposing interests in the process of creating a university spin-off company;

  • determine company and deal value and negotiate a license and investment agreement;

  • choose a fitting strategy for technology exploitation;

  • direct company formation towards an approach that suits your vision and ambitions;

  • create a team that fits the potential of the opportunity you want to exploit;

  • design an approach for funding your start-up;

  • evaluate your venture from the investor's perspective;

  • maintain the entrepreneurial balance in the growing venture.

  • Tuesday and Thursday 14:00 – 17:00 hrs, September 5th – October 31st 2017

  • Exam: 14:00 – 17:00 hrs, November 7th 2017

Mode of instruction

The course emphasises small-scale, interactive teaching that focuses on real-life case studies. Students will be debriefed, in hindsight, on what really happened.
