Students from other tracks of Literary Studies or Media Studies are welcome provided they have a good reading and listening proficiency in French. In that case, the oral presentation and paper will be in English or Dutch. Please contact the teacher before signing in.
Description
Grande oeuvre de la littérature moderne, A la recherche du temps perdu est un roman-fleuve plein de personnages hauts en couleur, qui donne une image très complète de la Belle Epoque. Dans ce cours, nous lirons les deux premiers volumes : Du côté de chez Swann en A l’ombre des jeunes filles en fleurs. Nous ferons d’une part une lecture approfondie, centrée autour des grands thèmes proustiens : la mémoire et l’oubli, l’amour et l’amitié, le temps et l’Histoire… Vous apprendrez ainsi à analyser des passages du point de vue thématique et stylistique.
D’autre part, le roman de Proust a fait l’objet , depuis sa parution dans les années 1910-1920, d’un accueil critique exceptionnel. Dans les études littéraires, la Recherche a suscité un flot de commentaires qui n’est pas près de s’arrêter. Chaque époque y découvre de nouvelles questions, en accord avec ses propres préoccupations. Cela nous donnera l’occasion de découvrir plusieurs approches critiques: thématique, narratologique, stylistique, génétique… Parallèlement, nous étudierons l’accueil artistique du roman à travers le cinéma – notamment le film de Raul Ruiz, Le temps retrouvé - et l’adaptation récente de Proust en bande dessinée.
Ce cours de master se situe dans le prolongement des séances sur Proust dans le cours de BA ‘Roman cinéma 1800 à nos jours’. Il l’approfondit mais ne le répète pas (car “Un amour de Swann” ne fait pas partie du programme). D’autre part, ce cours offre une excellente combinaison avec le cours master ‘European Modernism’, où certaines pages de Proust seront étudiées dans le contexte du Modernisme et comparées avec d’autres écrivains modernistes de son époque, en Grande-Bretagne, en Allemagne et en Italie.

Research MA students should reveal in their coursework a more nuanced understanding of the complex relationship between social formations and cultural productions by means of a more detailed and thorough theoretical/methodological framework.

Research MA students will have to write an extra 3000 word paper on a topic to be decided in consultation with the tutor.

Exam review
How and when an exam review will take place will be disclosed together with the publication of the exam results at the latest. If a student requests a review within 30 days after publication of the exam results, an exam review will have to be organized.
