45 ec of the Bachelor Archaeology first year obtained.
Description
This course teaches the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in archaeological fieldwork and analyses. Spatial research methods made possible by this technology will be the centre of this course, both in theory and practice.
Set-up of the course
Weekly:
2 hours of lectures;
4 hours of computer practical;
4 hours of discussion sessions about literature.
Course objectives
Gaining insight into the way in which Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are currently used in archaeology. The technical aspects as well as their applications will be discussed;
Learning how to manage and analyse spatial archaeological data;
Ability to make simple (distribution) maps in a GIS for your own research.

Lectures;
Practical sessions with compulsory attendance;
Discussion sessions with compulsory attendance.
Course load
The course load will be distributed as follows:
14 hours of lectures (1 ec);
36 hours of practical sessions including a final assignment (2 ec);
28 hours of work group sessions (1 ec);
287 pages of literature (1 ec).
Assessment method
Written exam.
You will only receive the exam result if you have attended all the practical and discussion sessions, and the final practical assignments have been submitted through BlackBoard.

Deadlines for assignments are included in the course syllabus.

Registration
Registration via uSis is mandatory.
The Administration Office will register all BA1 students for their tutorials (not lectures; register via uSis!).
BA2, BA3, MA/MSc and RMA/RMSc students are required to register for all lectures and tutorials well in time.
The Administration Office registers all students for their exams, students are not required to do this in uSis.
