Admission requirements

Admission to the Research Master Archaeology programme.

Description

Organised around ongoing research of the Near Eastern staff, this course will present you with evidence (architecture, material culture, etc.) from recent surveys and excavations in the desert regions of the Near East (in particular Jordan).

The course will take you into the practicalities of research, including data collection, methodology, and interpretation of the available archaeological record, and the preparation of a publication.

Set-up of the course

Introductory lecture about planned research, subsequent individual and group research, weekly discussions and progress meetings, preparation of paper.

Course objectives

  • Detailed knowledge of the period, region, research problems, relevant literature, current debates and approaches concerning the theme of research;

  • Ability to critically assess current research and literature and to voice one’s well-argumented opinion;

  • Ability to process archaeological data and to apply relevant theoretical models;

  • Ability to present original research in an academic manner.

Mode of instruction

  • Lectures;

  • Reading of relevant books/articles;

  • Individual assignments;

  • Discussion on the basis of these assignments;

  • Preparation of joint report.

Course load

The course load will be distributed as follows:

  • 7×2 hours of lectures (1 ec);

  • Written assignments, 2,000 words (1 ec);

  • 140 pages of literature (1 ec);

  • 24,5 days of research (7 ec).

Assessment method

  • Active participation in class discussions (15%);

  • Reading of assigned literature (15%);

  • Individual and joint research (35%);

  • Quality of written assignments on the basis of research (35%).

Reading list

The reading list will be provided at the beginning of the course.

Registration

Registration via uSis is mandatory.

  • The Administration Office will register all BA1 students for their tutorials (not lectures; register via uSis!).

  • BA2, BA3, MA/MSc and RMA/RMSc students are required to register for all lectures and tutorials well in time.

  • The Administration Office registers all students for their exams, students are not required to do this in uSis.
