Syntax is the study of sentential structure. Students are first introduced to the most important terms and concepts within the study of syntax. After getting acquainted with the diagnostic tests to distinguish word classes and grammatical categories, we turn to diagnostic tests for constituent structures and hierarchical structures. In the second part of the course, we introduce students to some basic elements of generative syntax.
