Optional Courses

I - Electives within the History department, Leiden University

Take a look at the list of the electives offered by the History Department. You do not need permission from the Board of Examiners.

II - Electives from other departments, Leiden University

All MA courses offered at level 400 or higher can be taken as an Optional Course. You do not need permission from the Board of Examiners. Below you can find some recommendations for a few specialisations:

Politics, Culture and National Identities

Readings in American History

III - Electives from another university

Requires permission from the Board of Examiners. Submit a request to the Board of Examiners of History beforehand, stating the course, department and university, and motivate why this course proves an interesting addition to your curriculum.

Study Abroad

Leiden University offers the option to follow optional courses and/or write your thesis abroad, more information is available on the Internationalisation website.

Keep in mind
1. Students have to be well in time, as the process of approval takes considerable time;
2. 10 EC Internships should meet a total study load of 280 hours
3. Your internship needs to be supervised by a member of staff from the History Department.
