1 Optional Courses

1.I - Electives within the History department, Leiden University

Take a look at the list of the electives offered by the History Department. You do not need permission from the Board of Examiners.

1.II - Electives from the Faculty of Humanities, Leiden University

All MA courses offered at level 400 or higher can be taken as an Optional Course. You do not need permission from the Board of Examiners. Below you can find some recommendations for a few specialisations:

Politics, Culture and National Identities

1.III - Electives from another Faculty, Leiden University

Requires petition ‘Request for replacement standard study component’ via uSis. Please select ‘Dummy course’ when asked. For more information on the procedure see Exemptions and petitions.

1.IV – Electives from another university

Requires petition ‘Request for following external courses’ via uSis. Please select ‘External course’ when asked. For more information on the procedure see Exemptions and petitions.

2. Study Abroad

Leiden University offers the option to follow optional courses and/or write your thesis abroad, more information is available on the Internationalisation website.

3. Internships

See the following website for the procedure. Furthermore, see the internship database (mostly in Dutch) for an overview of recurring possibilities.

Keep in mind

  • Students have to be well in time, as the process of approval takes considerable time;

  • 10 EC Internships should meet a total study load of 280 hours;

  • Your internship needs to be supervised by a member of staff from the History Department.
