Knowledge of Biblical Aramaic and/or Targumic Aramaic.

Description

This course encompasses the study of literary, epigraphical and archaeological sources for the cultural history of communities writing in Aramaic. Usually a variety of first millennium BCE Aramaic is selected.

Course objectives

Upon completion of this course, students will be familiar with an important first millennium variety of Aramaic and will be capable to study independently its documents.
The course also contributes to the improvement of the presentation and writing skills of the students.

This research seminar contributes to the achievement of learning outcomes 4a and 4c (to give and write a clear and well-argued oral and written presentation on a research topic in accordance with academic standards) of the study programme Classics and Ancient Civilizations.

Course Load

Total course load 10 ec x 28 hours = 280 hours:

  • 28 hours in class;

  • 78 hours of class preparation;

  • 54 hours for the preparation of the oral presentation;

  • 120 hours for the writing of the paper.

Assessment and grading method (in percentages):

  • Class preparation and oral presentation (40%);

  • Paper (60%).

Weighing

The final grade for the course is established by determining the weighted average.

Resit

In case of an insufficient, the student will have the opportunity to give another oral presentation and/or review his/her paper.

Inspection and feedback

Students will be invited to discuss the paper and their other results for the seminar (class preparation and oral presentation) individually with the teacher, as soon as the results have been published.
