Logic and Phenomenology

Vak

Description

The standard picture of logic is that it studies formal systems in abstraction from the use we make of it: acts of judgement and inference should not play a role in order to keep logic objective. In this course this picture of logic will be challenged from different perspectives by trying to bring phenomenological notions into logic right from the start. But, how can we bring in the first person, the judging agent, without thereby committing oneself to a form of psychologism? How can we give a phenomenological account of logic? What is the role of judgement in logic? What is the role of the first person in logic? How are we to justify the logical axioms and inference rules? Readings from Frege, Husserl, and Per Martin-Lof will be announced at the beginning of the course.
