Description

The effects of language contact may be important indicators of the linguistic past. In this course, the possibilities and problems of using language contact to reconstruct language prehistory will be explored through selected case studies covering different contact situations, different linguistic domains, and known as well as unknown contact languages. Students will make a presentation and write a paper about a case of language contact of their own choice.

Course objectives

After this course, students will be able to:

  • Identify several types of prehistoric language contact

  • Analyse and discuss arguments on language prehistory based on language contact

  • Critically present a case of inferences on prehistory based on language contact
