BA Engels: Mentoraat

Course
2020-2021

Entry requirements

The mentoring sessions are a compulsory part of the first year (propaedeuse) in English Language and Culture (year 1).

Description

Mentoring is a compulsory part of the propaedeuse. Mentoring consists of various types of meetings, the focus of which is to teach you different aspects of effective study. The topics covered include etiquette, why you should read the course descriptions and how to give constructive feedback in course evaluations. In addition, you are introduced to Leiden University Libraries and given information on the job market.

As part of the mentoring, the Expertise Centre for Academic Skills (EAV) also provides the research skills course. This covers how to make an argument, how to evaluate sources, what constitutes plagiarism and how to use sources. The course is taught in the first block of the semester to ensure that you possess the knowledge you need to submit the mid-term assignment for Literature 1A.

If your study advice in January is negative, you must take part in the study skills course, also taught by EAV. This should help you avoid a negative Binding Study Advice at the end of the academic year. These meetings take place in the second semester. If this applies to you, your coordinator of studies will provide more information after you receive the study advice.

All full-time students must attend the mentor meetings.
