Leadership and Organisational Behaviour

Admission requirements

Only students of the specialization Public Management and Leadership (Master in Public Administration) can be admitted to this course.

Description

In this course, we study theories and state-of-the-art research on leadership and organizational behavior in public management. Generally, leadership behavior is intended to influence and facilitate followers’ accomplishment of organizational goals. We explore how different leadership behaviors contribute to organizational performance amidst varying contextual circumstances, as well as the role of leadership behavior in relation to complex, contemporary processes of organizational behavior on different levels of analysis. These include the management of organizational change, employee motivation, teamwork, psychological safety, and diversity and inclusion.

Course Objectives

At the end of this course, students are able to

*understand and compare the key theories in the field of leadership and organizational behavior in public management;
*critically evaluate state-of-the art empirical research in this field;
*apply theories through reference to national and international cases;
*critically comment on how the particular context of public organizations influences leadership and organizational behavior within public organizations;
*provide recommendations regarding public leadership behavior based on theory and empirical evidence.

Mode of Instruction

Lectures (7x2 hours) aimed at discussing the course literature with students.
Seminars (7x2 hours) aimed at applying the course literature and working on the group assignment.

Assessment method

Written exam (50%) and group assignment (50%). A retake is possible for both forms of assessment. Students must pass each assignment with a grade of 5.5 or higher to fulfill the course requirements.

From 2020-2021 onwards, partial grades will not remain valid after the exam and the resit of the course.

Reading list

A selection of articles available through the university network. The literature will be communicated in the syllabus.

Registration

Register for every course and workgroup via uSis. Some courses and workgroups have a limited number of participants, so register on time (before the course starts). In uSis you can access your personal schedule and view your results. Registration in uSis is possible from four weeks before the start of the course.

From the academic year 2020-2021 Leiden University uses Brightspace as its online learning management system. After enrollment for the course in uSis you will be automatically enrolled in the Brightspace environment of this course.
