Entrance requirements
Participation in an entrance exam that will consist of an online motivation interview with the teacher and an assessment of your artistic work. The entrance exam for Graphic Design 1 is Wednesday 2 September 2020. After your online application the KABK will contact you at the end of August.
More information about the entrance requirements of Graphic Design 1:
Students show a portfolio/body of work before entering the course. This portfolio should be digitally uploaded during the registration process. Although it might come in handy, the students taking the Graphic Design 1 or 2 class do not need to have any knowledge of the usual software such as the Adobe Creative Suite. What is required is an ability to visualise thoughts and ideas into a formal language: images in all kinds of shapes and sizes, as well as into text and words. Skills and interests can include drawing, writing, organising of text and image, letter drawing, painting, editing, performing, photographing, filming, creative coding, modelling, thinking in a series — wether they concern pages of a book or frames of a movie. Above all, students are required to demonstrate an interest in the world around them, enter the course with a open mind for feedback of fellow classmates and the teacher and feel highly motivated to learn to critically talk visually.
In addition to the portfolio, students send in a motivation letter of max. 500 words. in which they explain why they would like to participate in Graphic Design 1.
Students that have followed GD1 and wish to further develop their work during GD2 (the second semester) can do so without re-admission.
Description
In this course students take on a “visual research” project. The subject of investigation may —but does not have to— relate to their academic studies. Students are then introduced to graphic design as a way to develop their visual arguments through playful and energetic exercises.
Learning objectives
The objective of the course is to develop visual literacy and towards the end of the semester a visual vocabulary, ideally in relation to the students academic work. As such, students learn to distinguish between visual illustrations and visual arguments and gain awareness of different image distribution infrastructures as well as reproductive techniques. They are encouraged to visually communicate a clear and critical position towards the subject of investigation.
This will be exercised through hands-on assignments using different digital/analogue techniques such as collage, riso-printing, screen-printing, image editing, poster design and publication design. Use of all KABK’s workshop facilities is supported. The second semester concludes with an exhibition.

Mode of instruction
Seminars with individual guidance and group discussions.
Mode of assesment
Attendance to the lessons is mandatory for 80% Individual assessment of work at the end of the course. At the end of the course there will be an exhibition. Participation in that is required.
