Entrance requirements
Participation in an online entrance exam that will consist of a motivation interview with the teacher and an assessment of your artistic work. Attention will be paid to your technical and creative skills, ideation, authenticity / originality, capacity of growth and motivation. An open and experimental attitude is essential.
After your online application the KABK will contact you at the end of August. The entrance exam for Painting 1 is 2 September 2020.
More information about the entrance requirements of Painting 1:
Students prepare a portfolio with at least 10 paintings/drawings on paper or canvas, amongst which at least 3 Paintings from direct perception (portrait, landscape, still life). This portfolio should be digitally uploaded during the online application procedure.
Additionally, students write a motivation letter of max. 500 words in which they explain why they would like to participate in the elective.
Description
How to create a painting that expresses what you have in mind? In this course you will develop in 14 practical lessons a range of technical painting skills. Attention is paid to light and dark, to the colours and their functioning, to sense of form, brushstroke, composition, and different ways to display depth. You will paint from perception (including model and still life), but also from memory. You are encouraged to experiment and guided in reflecting on your own and others’ work. You will begin developing your own style and subject matter. In each class will be shown examples of relevant paintings from the art history by means of a short PowerPoint presentation.
Course objectives
Intensification of the perception, application of the fundamental principles of the painting technique, and a beginning of personal image- and idea development. The course consists of several modules in each of which a specific method or subject matter is treated.
Schedule
Entrance exams: start of September, exact date will follow. The date of the entrance exam is not negatiable. Lessons: Thursday from 19.00 – 21.30 hrs. Period: 24 September until 17 December 2020 Location: KABK, Prinsessegracht 4, Den Haag. Room: PB125
Mode of instruction
Practical lessons with thematic asseignments, aimed at learning to deal with different materials and techniques and their specific expression and application. Individual tutorials while painting, short PowerPoint presentations with relevant images from art history, and collective evaluations of the work. Between classes: keeping a visual inspiration diary, which will be evaluated individually in each lesson. At the end of the semester a joint exhibition.
Mode of assessment
Attendance to the lessons is mandatory for 80% Individual assessment of work at the end of the course. At the end of the course there will be an exhibition. Participation in that is required. At least 10 paintings and a full inspiration book showing a satisfactory development.
