International Political Negotiation

Course
2020-2021

Description

This seminar is about understanding and handling international political negotiation processes, applying simulation- and other exercises in order to get to grips with theory and practice of negotiating within and between states, outside and inside international organizations. It is about the merger of opposing interests through compromise, compensation and construction. The seminar covers twenty hours in ten sessions.

During session 1 each registered student will receive a hard copy of a Workbook.
The Workbook will be used on every of the ten two-hrs. sessions and provides the participants with about sixty titles of optional books and articles on bargaining situations. The Workbook and the obligatory literature will be published online and on Brightspace.

Students have to prove what they learned through a paper of about 3000 words plus bibliography. They will have to show their knowledge of – and insight in – the processes, procedures, parties, people, power, positions and products (outcomes), in attempts to deal with contentious issues and complex situations.

Papers should have an introduction with a research question and hypotheses, an outline of relevant theories and literature, a case study, and a conclusions including policy recommendations. Analytical papers with a theoretical approach applied to a practical case will be receive a high grade, provided they are consistent and well referenced.

In session 1 the teacher will explain the paper issue, in session 2 students will propose the subjects of their papers which will be finalized in session 3, in session 10 the students will have to hand-over their papers, either hard-copy or online. Note: there will be an attendance list at each session, an hour of non-attendance will diminish the final grade by ¼ point. If a student has a legitimate reason for being absent, she/he has to discuss an extra assignment with the lecturer/trainer. The assignment will waiver the subtraction of points from the final grade.

Course objectives

Students will learn how to diagnose and navigate situations by capturing the different concepts of international negotiation theories, understanding the relevance of these approaches in the real world, enhance their negotiation skill and style, negotiating effectively through optimal strategies and tactics in an international and multicultural environment.

The course will confront theory with practice, thereby raising awareness of one’s capacity in defending interests and handling emotions. This is done through a series of lectures, exercises and debriefings, including films showing bilateral and multilateral processes as they happen in real-life situations. In-between exercises there will be breaks.
