Description

This course provides a basic overview in subjects and methods of psycholinguistic research. The main aim of the course is to provide an introduction to core areas of psycholinguistics: the mental lexicon, sentence structure, production and perception, as well as language and the brain. Standard methods of psycholinguistic research will also be introduced, such as behavioral methods (reaction time and error analyses, eye-tracking, etc.), as well as basic statistical analysis of behavioral data.

Course objectives

  • Students gain insights into the most important problems and concepts of language production and language comprehension.

  • Students become familiar with the most relevant psycholinguistic theories and models of language production and language comprehension.

  • Students are introduced to the most important psycholinguistic research methods for language production and language comprehension.

  • Students are able to read and understand scientific research papers published in peer-reviewed journals or edited volumes.

Assessment method

Assessment

Two written exams with closed questions (multiple choice). Students need to pass both exams, i.e. both exams need to be sufficient. The final grade is the mean of both sufficiently passed exams, i.e. both exams count for 50% towards the final grade.

Both exams can be resat during the official resit.

Inspection and feedback

How and when an exam review will take place will be disclosed together with the publication of the exam results at the latest. If a student requests a review within 30 days after publication of the exam results, an exam review will have to be organized.

Occasionally, specific research papers will have to be read. The relevant papers will be made known to the students on Brightspace
