Admission requirements

Bachelor's degree in Archaeology or other relevant discipline obtained.

Description

This practical lecture series starts with the basics of construction history, ‘Standing up Archaeology’.
Several tutorials will address:

  • Stone and brick (types, bonds, ages, finishing)

  • Timber (types, marks, walls, floors, ceilings and roofs)

  • Windows and doors

  • Foundations and cellars

  • Heritage and restoration

Subsequently, there will be 2 practical exercises, in which will be explained how to make a documentation and description of one element of an existing building.

Course objectives

Using a building element (exercise 3) and placing it in a functional and historical context will result in a final paper (exercise 4) to be delivered in May.

Course load

  • 28 hours of lectures and tutorials (2 ec);

  • 140 pages of literature (1 ec);

  • Midterm essay (Exercise 3 of the course) and final paper (2 ec).

Assessment method

  • Midterm essay (exercise 3) (1/3);

  • Final paper (exercise 4) (2/3).

The essay needs to be at least a 5.5: no compensation is allowed.
A retake is only possible for the final essay, but only if all other requirements have been met.

Registration

Registration in uSis is mandatory. You can register for this course until 5 days before the first class.

Registration in uSis automatically leads to enrollment in the corresponding Brightspace module. Therefore you do not need to enroll in Brightspace, but make sure to register for this course in uSis.

You are required to register for all lectures and tutorials well in time. The Administration Office registers all students for their exams, you are not required to do this in uSis.
