Admission requirements

The examination and, if indicated, the teaching of the following units of study can only be taken if the examinations of the preceding units of study have been passed of Phonology 1

Description

In this course important developments in phonological theory are introduced and discussed on the basis of selected articles and book chapters. Topics include Feature Geometry, Markedness, Prosodic Morphology and Optimality Theory.

Course objectives

Students who have successfully completed this course:

  • have acquired knowledge about the basics of phonological theory.

  • understand the basics of theoretical argumentation in phonology and are able to apply this knowledge at a basic level.

  • are able to analyze phonological data using Optimality Theory at a basic level.

Homework assignments. These have to be handed in on time in order to be admitted to the midterm exam.
Take-home midterm exam
Final written exam with short open questions

Weighing

Midterm: 30%
Final exam: 70%
In order to pass the grade for the final exam has to be 5.5 or higher.

Resit

A resit is possible for the final exam.

inspection and feedback

Reviews will be organized on an individual basis within 30 days after publication of the exam results.
