Phonology 2

Analysis and Synthesis of Speech

Description

This course's central theme is the relationship between the physical realization of speech sounds and their cognitive representations (i.e., the phonetics/phonology interface). We will critically read and discuss articles/book chapters and work jointly on designed experiments or corpus data to address open research questions in the assigned literature. The specific research topic we will cover is speech variation and its relation to speech planning and production. Our main empirical base will be on laryngeal contrasts and supra-segmental prosodic contrasts. A related theme for all possible topics is potential individual variation. As a final assignment, students will carry out a collaborative group project, and each will write a report of their own on the experimental findings.
