Admission requirements

Although the course is open to all LAS MA students, it is strongly recommended that students have at least a basic knowledge of phonetics/phonology, syntax, sociolinguistics, and bilingualism (i.e., the level of knowledge of a BA LAS student at the end of the BA). Course is also open to students of MA Linguistics with Spanish academic knowledge.


This course is an introduction to the study of linguistic phenomena in a Latin American context. Main theoretical and methodological issues will be discussed by drawing on examples from studies of bilingualism, language contact, language variation and language acquisition in Spanish and Portuguese (i.e., the course material will be based on academic articles relevant to the field). In colsultation with the students and taking into account their research interests, several topics will be presented, from first to second language acquisition, individual to social bilingualism and finally language instruction and language policies in Latin America. Readings, discussions, and practical sessions will center on theoretical issues and methods of data collection. Because of the wide variety of possible topics we could cover related to linguistics in Latin America and the accelerated nature of the master’s program, some classes will be specifically focused on those aspects that are most relevant for students’ theses (theory, data collection and analysis, etc.).

Course objectives

The students will acquire in depth knowledge of how LA languages can be studied from a variety of viewpoints, including generative, sociolinguistic, and psycholinguistic perspectives. In addition, students will be able to show how different perspectives can shed light on their own research interests regarding linguistic characteristics in Latin America.

Inspection and feedback

How and when an assessment review will take place will be disclosed together with the publication of the assessment results at the latest. If a student requests a review within 30 days after publication of the assessment results, a review will have to be organized.
