Description
Summary description:
This course aims to discuss and analyze the place of politics in the culture of Latin America. Concepts from international and Latin American theory will be used, with special attention to the relationship between image, discourse, fiction and community. The common thread of the seminar will be to distinguish the place of the political in Latin American literary and cinematographic fiction during the 20th and 21st centuries. To do this, work will be done in the first instance on an adequate definition of the concept of politics and the political, based on the most current debate on this topic. We will also address the current debate on Latin American modernity and its cultural and political guidelines. In the third place, the concept of experience will be studied, linked to the previous topics, and in the fourth place, cases of films and stories in which both "the political" and "the modern" play a fundamental role will be studied. Working on Latin American cinema and literature, we will try to arrive at a more exact notion about the relationship between politics and aesthetics and general considerations about the experience of Latin American modernity.
