Admission requirements

This course is only open to students in the MA Book and Digital Media Studies (or exchange students admitted to this programme).

Description

This course consists of a series of lectures, along with events, excursions and visits organized in relation to the field of expertise of Book and Digital Media Studies, to prepare students for a career in one of the many professions in the world of books and texts. Some sessions centre on skills training, whereas others equip students to build a professional network or connect to current scholarly research in the field.
In principle, a three-day combined excursion to the Gutenburg Museum in Mainz and the Frankfurt Buch Fair are part of the programme, as is a visit to the Plantin-Moretus Museum in Antwerp, yet the programme may be subject to change as a result of current developments.

Course objectives

Students:

  • Learn to connect theoretical concepts and practical applications in the field of book and digital media studies (BDMS);

  • Will develop the ability to reflect on current issues in the field of BDMS;

  • Develop their writing skills,

  • Familiarise themselves with the diverse career paths in the field of BDMS

  • Are introduced to professionals in positions in the field of BDMS

Assessment method

Assessment

Assessment is based on two writing assignments of limited length (appx. 1500 w), each in a specific, prescribed genre and on a subject related to the MA BDMS in the broadest sense (students may consult the course coordinator).
In addition, students will have to produce a dossier of five activities (lectures, visits to exhibitions, etc.) in which they have participated.

Weighing

The final grade for this course is the average of the two writing assignments (each 50%), with the additional requirement that the Dossier has been marked sufficient.

Resit

The resit consists of the same components as the first attempt.

Inspection and feedback

How and when an exam review will take place will be disclosed together with the publication of the exam results at the latest. If a student requests a review within 30 days after publication of the exam results, an exam review will have to be organized.
