Description

The internship provides an excellent opportunity to learn about a variety of approaches and methods that are used in the field of Parenting and Child Development. The student can either choose a practical position at an external organization (Practical Internship) or participate in an ongoing research project at the Programme group Parenting, Child care and Development (Research Internship) . The former should focus on the field of Parenting and Child Development.

Practical internship
The activities at an external organization should focus on the field of Parenting and Child Development and can involve diverse fields, such as:

  • Receiving raining in and carrying out family-focused interventions

  • Developing (parts of) family-focused interventions

  • Updating and/or developing (treatment) protocols for the internship institution

  • Policy

Students are allowed to search for their own practical internship; new openings will be placed on Brightspace as well. If students find their own practical internship, they need to contact the coordinator to make sure the internship fits the standards of the Master’s program. Supervision will be provided by the external organization; a university teacher will supervise the general progress of the internship and grade internship reports.

Research Internship
The student participates in an ongoing research project of Programme group Parenting, Child Care and Development. Depending on the research project, students will be involved in various practical aspects of doing research, such as the recruitment of participants, the actual data collection in the lab/home setting/clinic/child care setting, coding video-material, etc.

The student’s work will be performed under supervision of a qualified staff member; an independent university teacher will supervise the general progress of the internship and grade internship reports.
The internship can begin at any point during the academic year, but the timing will also depend on the availability of positions in a research project. The internship can be combined with the Master’s project.

When there is a new opportunity for participation in a research project this will be announced to students via Brightspace.

Course objectives

The general objectives of the internship are:

  • Integration of knowledge and skills in research and practice previously acquired in course work, in particular in realistic work situations

  • The acquisition of further relevant knowledge and skills, and insight into practical situations in the field of work

  • Intensive acquaintance with a relevant field of research or work

  • Learning to function independently and responsibly in an organization (professional attitudes)

  • Gaining insight into one’s own potential and limitations, both with regard to skills and with regard to personal functioning

Mode of instruction

Students agree with the internship institution on how long the internship will last and how many days per week the student will work at the internship institution. This should amount to at least 420 hours (15 EC equals 420 hours). Within these hours, students should also attend internship meetings and write an internship plan, interim evaluation report and final evaluation report.

Assessment

At the end of your internship period, your internship tutor will determine your final grade. This grade is based on:
1. The assessment advice of your internship supervisor
2. The quality of the assignments you handed in and your participation in internship meetings
3. The quality of your internship report and/or final product. All parts should be assessed as at least satisfactory

Literature to be studied depends on the actual activities, and will be made available through the researcher or internship organization.

Registration

Education
It is mandatory to register for each course via uSis. This applies to both the lectures and the working groups, even if they take place online. Without a valid registration in uSis you will not be able to participate in the course and you will not have access to the Brightspace module of the course.

Exams
In addition, it is also mandatory to register separately in uSis for each exam (i.e. both the first exam opportunity and, if necessary, the resit) in uSis. This also applies to partial examinations in a course. This is possible up to 10 calendar days prior to the exam. You cannot take the exam without a valid registration in uSis.

NB If the exam concerns a paper or a practical assignment, you do not need to register in uSis.

NB The exam of this course is your final evaluation report. This means that you do not have to register yourself for this exam in uSis.
