Research Master Internship

Course
2021-2022

Description

Students will do an internship at an organization outside of Leiden University, where they will perform tasks fitting the daily practice of a scientifically educated pedagoog. The internship is in an area that fits the student’s substantive profile. For instance, if the student has chosen a non-clinical profile, the internship may be at a school, an organization for school research, or an organization for family support or foster care. If the student has chosen a clinical profile, the internship will be at a clinical facility, such as the LUBEC. In any case, the organization where the student does the internship will have connections to or experience with scientific research.

Course objectives

To become good researchers in the field of education and child studies, students need to be able to look at the field from the perspective of a professional within that field. As researchers, they will need to connect their research perspective to that of a professional pedagoog to perform research that is sensitive to the context, and will be useful to that context. The primary objective of this course is for students to engage in the practice of an (ortho-)pedagoog and to get to know this practice from within. Additionally, they will use the experience they gained in practice to design (not perform) a useful and attainable research project in a context similar to that of their internship.

After following this course, students will be able to:

  • understand the practice of prevention, intervention, diagnostics, and/or treatment in the field of education and child studies, based on extensive personal experience;

  • connect the academic and professional field;

  • translate scientific knowledge into interventions or (other) research projects in clinical and non-clinical contexts;

  • show professional conduct according to the NVO (Association of Educationalists in the Netherlands) professional (ethical) code;

  • apply various theoretical frameworks in conducting research in the field of education and child studies;

  • identify the social relevance of a research project;

  • participate in professional teamwork, with a constructive and responsible attitude, and reflect on their own personal functioning in the team;

  • reflect on their own learning process;

  • design a research project connected to professional practice in education and child studies.
    If the student opts for the NVO professional registration Basis Orthopedagoog or Basis Pedagoog (and has already met the requirements for this registration in their Bachelor programme), the Research Master Internship contributes to this qualification.

Mode of instruction

Students will perform professional tasks within an organization in the field of education and child studies. Within the organization, they will be supervised by a professional who has experience or affiliation with scientific research. Within the university, they will be supervised by the internship coordinator , who will also assist students in finding an internship that fits their profile; so, students do not need to find their own organization.

Assessment

Assessment will consist of two parts

  • Assessment of the professional conduct within the organization. This will be assessed by the internship coordinator based on a standard form with rubrics, after consulting the supervising professional within the organization.

  • Students will write a proposal for a research project in a context similar to that of their internship. (Note that they will not actually perform their proposed study.) They will use the experience they gained in their internship to identify the social relevance of the project, as well as ethical considerations, and practical obstacles. The proposal will be assessed by the internship coordinator using a standardized form that will be posted on Brightspace along with the format for the research proposal.
    To pass this course, both the professional conduct and the research proposal need to be at a passing level (6.0 or higher). If the research proposal obtains a failing grade, the student will get one opportunity to rewrite it, based on feedback (the re-exam). If the professional conduct is at a failing level, the student will need to do another internship at a different organisation.

Brightspace

Additional information can be found on the Brightspace site of the course Research Internship.

Reading list

There is no reading list for this course. Depending on the context of their internship, students will need to read scientific literature to support their work. In addition, they will need to read scientific papers as a background to their assignment.
