This is a seminar with a limited amount of participants (max. 20 students), and is meant for Archaeology students exclusively;
This is not an optional course for the Archaeology BA3 programme. If you want to take this course as an extra-curricular course in your programme, you should ask permission from the Board of Examiners. You can only be admitted with permission, with proper argumentation, and only if there are spots left.
Description
Drawing on archaeological and ethnographic data, experimental archaeology focuses on the reconstruction of past technologies, activities, buildings and taphonomic processes.
This course explores the value of experimental archaeology as a research tool for archaeological investigation and its ever growing relevance in public outreach.
During the practical sessions for this course you will have the opportunity to work with a variety of materials and technologies. The course will be part of the Archeologie Telt project “Putting life into Late Neolithic houses; investigating domestic craft and subsistence activities through experiments and material analysis ”.
This project will take place in close collaboration with Masamuda in the Vlaardingen Broekpolder, a recently opened archaeological open-air educational centre.
Course objectives
Increased knowledge about how objects are made and used by means of experimental archaeology;
Knowledge of and insight in the experimental and analytical methods with which to derive information from artefacts;
Basic knowledge of the role of experimental archaeology in scientific research and public outreach;
Ability to design an experiment.

Registration in uSis is mandatory. You can register for this course until 5 days before the first class.
Registration in uSis automatically leads to enrollment in the corresponding Brightspace module. Therefore you do not need to enroll in Brightspace, but make sure to register for this course in uSis.
You are required to register for all lectures and tutorials well in time. The Administration Office registers all students for their exams, you are not required to do this in uSis.
