Description

We will study the Andean language Quechua as an example of a non-western language. Quechua was the lingua franca of the Inca Empire and is still spoken by millions of people today. The language is spoken in six South American countries: Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, and Argentina.

In contrast to many western languages, Quechua expresses properties such as transitions (marking of both the subject and object on the verb), a four person system, switch reference in adverbial subordination, and evidentiality (the grammatical marking of information source). Another interesting property of the language is that it shows little irregularity.

The course will focus on the Ayacucho variety of the language spoken in Peru. The main goal is to provide an overview of the phonology, morphology and syntax of this Quechua variety. Translation, glossing, and formulation exercises will be used in order to convey insights into de grammar of the language. Through the course materials students will obtain insight into the cultural and sociolinguistic situation of the Andes.
