Description
What personal and environmental factors contribute to a higher risk for juvenile delinquency? Why do some adolescents and young adults display criminal behavior? What kind of prevention and intervention programs are effective?
During this course, scientists, lawyers and youth workers share their academic insights and personal experiences within the field of juvenile delinquency. Based on interdisciplinary insights and scientific research, you will design and present a short prevention or intervention program (group assignment) related to youth and drug abuse, (peer) mistreatment, sexual assault, and (right wing) extremism.
Course objectives
After successful completion of this course, you will:
Be aware of risk factors for developing criminal behaviour in adolescents
Be informed about the daily reality of juvenile delinquents and the law system
Be acquainted with juvenile delinquency prevention and intervention programmes
Be able to design a feasible, effective and innovative intervention programme aimed at prevention or intervention of juvenile delinquency.
Mode of instruction
In interactive lectures, scientific and experiential experts in the field of juvenile delinquency share their insights, and by doing so, assist you in designing a program.
Assessment
After the presentation, you hand in the intervention programme on Brightspace. The course coordinator assesses your intervention on a) feasibility, b) effectiveness, and c) innovativeness.

You can register for the Elective Honours Modules via uSis until five days before the start of the course.
Courses starting in semester 1: registration opens July 15th.
