Digital Data Analysis (Statistics II)


Admission requirements

Students are required to have completed the course ‘Statistics for the Humanities (Statistics I)’.


This course builds on the fundamentals acquired in Statistics I, and covers analyses and tools needed for data exploration and analysis within the humanities. This course will equip students with the understanding of data analysis and the use of digital tools to perform such analyses. Students will learn to formulate quantitative research questions and hypotheses, plan what is needed to explore and answer those questions, ranging from collecting and structuring data sets, to choosing the appropriate analysis, and reporting on the results. Examples include analysis of questionnaire data, investigating correlations in historical data, and using scaling and clustering to understand similarities and differences between groups of data. The focus in this course lies on a practical understanding of the various analyses and statistics involved in quantitative research in the humanities, as well as on developing practical digital data analysis skills using the freely available software R.

Course objectives

After successfully completing the course students will be able to:

  • Formulate a research question and operationalize this question for quantitative data analysis.

  • Determine the data needed, and plan collection, structuring and annotation.

  • Choose and apply the appropriate method of analysis and procedures to explore relations between variables and test hypotheses.

  • Collect and analyze data sets by using digital tools.

  • Report on quantitative research, providing arguments for and explaining the limitations of the data and methods used.

The final mark for the course is established by determining the weighted average.


A resit is possible for the final paper.

Inspection and feedback

How and when an exam review will take place will be disclosed together with the publication of the exam results at the latest. If a student requests a review within 30 days after publication of the exam results, an exam review will have to be organized.

Attendance and active participation are obligatory. Students are required to prepare for and attend all sessions. The lecturers need to be informed without delay of any classes missed for a good reason (i.e. due to unforeseen circumstances such as illness, family issues, problems with residence permits). The maximum of such absences during a semester is two. Being absent without notification and/or more than two times can result in exclusion from the term end exams and a failing grade for the course.
