Description

This subject builds on knowledge accumulated in the first two subjects. The goal is to strengthen African partnerships network, and develop sustainable project planning skills. The online learning environment forms an integral part of this course, which consists out of three modules.

Module I: A Small Private Online Course (SPOC): A Critical Engagement with Advancing the SDGs (6 ECs) aims to develop critical, transdisciplinary and innovative approaches to sustainable development. It is offered as a global classroom with invited guest students from African-based higher institutions.

Module II: Building Networks (4 ECs) aims to enables students to continue building their own network through participating in a series of webinars and excursion with key stakeholder and partners which inform EU-Dutch-African relations.

Module III: A three week Africa field study (5 ECs) is the integrative focal point of this minor to experience what students have learnt in a real-life situation. If travel is allowed by Leiden university, students can choose between participating in a structured visit to Kenya, Morocco, or South Africa. This module is self-funded, and students who cannot or do not want to partake in the field study abroad, can complete this module in the Netherlands.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion students will have:

  1. Acquired a foundational understanding of:
  • Strategies, policies and partnerships that support NL-African collaboration;

  • Various role-players that advance the achievement of the Agenda 2063 and the SDGs;

  • The significance of numerous approaches and strategies in sustainable interventions;

  • Current growth and development realities on the African continent.

  1. Developed skills and competencies to:
  • Build African focused strategic alliance and partnership networks;

  • Source information online and learn independently;

  • Observe and evaluate the realities of themes introduced in the minor;

  • Connect with academics and African students to develop international networks.
