1 Optional Courses
1.I - Electives within the History department, Leiden University
All MA courses offered at level 500 or higher can be taken as an Optional Course. Take a look at the list of the electives offered by the History Department. You do not need permission from the Board of Examiners.
1.II - Electives from the Faculty of Humanities, Leiden University
All MA courses offered at level 500 or higher can be taken as an Optional Course. You do not need permission from the Board of Examiners.
1.III - Electives from another Faculty, Leiden University
Requires petition ‘Request for replacement standard study component’ via uSis. Please select ‘Dummy course’ when asked. For more information on the procedure see Exemptions and petitions.
1.IV – Electives from another university
Requires petition ‘Request for following external courses’ via uSis. Please select ‘External course’ when asked. For more information on the procedure see Exemptions and petitions.
2. Study Abroad
Leiden University offers the option to follow optional courses and/or write your thesis abroad. For more information, please contact the Humanities International Office.

Keep in mind
Students have to be well in time, as the process of approval takes considerable time;
Internships should be at least 10 EC or more. Internships for less than 10 EC will not be approved;
20 EC Internships should meet a total study load of 560 hours;
Your internship needs to be supervised by a member of staff from the History Department;
Your internship assignment should have a clear research component.
