Admission requirements

Not applicable

Description

This course provides an introduction to the principles and methods of financial accounting, management accounting and control. Starting from the different stakeholders in our economy (including corporate shareholders, corporate management, fiscal and regulatory authorities), we discuss their requirements for financial information. The student will learn how international financial reporting standards (IFRS) provide a set of guidelines with respect to the structure and content of financial statements, to meet these requirements. Moreover, several techniques for identifying, recording and posting of economic transactions, in accordance with these standards will be presented. The interpretation of financial statements and their use in financial decision making is also discussed during the course. The reliability of a financial statement, and thus its usefulness for decision making, depends on the quality of the recorded data, upon which the statement is based. We will discuss how a system of internal controls can improve the quality of recorded data and reduce the risk of misstatement. In the last part of the course the student is introduced to the principles and methods of management accounting.
